Some outdoor space, however limited, is a real asset when it comes to family life; for many people, the whole concept of a family home is bound up with the garden that serves as an extension of it. As with the planning and arrangement of indoor spaces, the design, planting and equipping of an outdoor area means balancing different generational requirements and desires. Whereas adults turn to gardens for relaxation and the sensual pleasures that contact with the nature offers, children view outdoor space both as free-form play areas and the opportunity to create private domains of their own away from adult eyes and ears.

If you have a very large garden, such conflicting requirements can be met simply by setting aside different areas for different functions. In a small space, you may have to work harder to ensure that everyone is happy. Gardens, however, naturally evolve, and with a little flexibility in terms of overall layout and design, it is possible to shift the emphasis subtly as your family grows.

Lawns: Soothing on the eye, a lawn is a great all-purpose garden surface for kickabouts or lying on a blanket in the sun. For most children, however, a lawn is a sports pitch, which can mean that your patch of green quickly erodes into a patch of bare direct or mud. Fine-leafed rye grass or hard-wearing utility grass seed mixtures will stand up to greater punishment.

Planting: Delicate plants should be restricted to borders or beds away from children’s play areas, or containerized in a location where trampling feet and flying footballs will cause no damage. Some common garden plants-including foxgloves, yew, bleeding heart and laburnum are poisonous and should be avoided where children might be tempted by flowers or berries; other prickly or sharp edged species should be planted away from play areas to prevent accidents. Encourage children to grow their own flowers or vegetables by giving them a small plot of their own or a few pots for spring bulbs. Vegetables such as radishes, lettuces and runner beans are easy to grow, as are flowers such as cornflowers, marigolds and poppies.
